Cesarean Rate Information in PA
Right now the most recent data that is availble for cesarean rates in PA is from 2007. You can find it at the PA Department of Health website.
In this day and age…when Walmart can figure out that a store in Topeka sold out 5 minutes ago of size 6X brown Hannah Montana t-shirts and load more onto a truck going to that store tomorrow morning…there really is no reason that the public should not be able to have access to full and complete data on hospitals’ performance at least on an annual basis, and soon after the end of the year…I’d think quarterly is even very possible. Its just that people don’t demand it.
Please everyone, take a moment to send an e-mail to webmaster@health.state.pa.us I did this to get the 2006 and 2007 stats up, and the stats went up within days of my e-mails. But I’ve e-mailed a couple of times asking for 2008, and no response. Perhaps they think I’m the only one who cares?
When you e-mail, please ask that they start putting up more stats, and be specific about what you would like to see. My wish list is to have the following stats available on a “by hospital” basis:
- episiotomy rate
- forceps/vacuum use rate (this is currently available by county)
- pitocin use
- induction rate
- epidural rate
- infection rate after cesarean
- re-admission rate following vaginal birth
- re-admission rate following cesarean birth
What is on your wish list for stats related to birth?

Indeed! Why did they demand all that info for my birth cert. if they weren’t going to compile it? I should think they could tell us shoe size and favorite cologne stats to boot!
